I am a full time writer of historical fiction living in New Hampshire with my husband. I have an MFA in Creative Writing from NYU and a BS in Material Science and Engineering from Cornell University. I grew up in the middle of hundreds of acres of forest outside Ithaca, NY.
When I was in my teens, my family embarked on a project to trace our ancestry and identify our living relatives. Through church records in Sweden and Norway, we found that Harald Fairhair (Harfagr), the first king of Norway is one of our ancestors. Those explorations gave me the seeds of my first novel, The Half-Drowned King, and the subsequent books in the trilogy.
I am also an avid knitter, Crosfitter, traveler, and cook, and a reader of all genres of fiction and non-fiction, and you will see posts about all of those things on my blog.
Here is an interview I did for HarperCollins’s Genre Bending Youtube show:

Thank you so much! The Sea Queen is out mid-August!
I work in a high school and a Hudson Valley town library and noticed an author’s name that looked very familiar on a newly arrived novel. Congratulations to the middle schooler I remember from my days working in a certain central New York alternative school on the publication of this novel! I look forward to reading and recommending this book. Nice work, Ms. Hartsuyker!
Oh my goodness, thank you for looking me up! I remember my time at ACS fondly.
Just bought Sea Queen, and looking forward to reading it. I really liked the Half-Drowned King.
Linnea, Half-Drowned King is just sumptuous, really drinking it in, impossible to put down. Going to Barnes & Noble TODAY to pick up Sea Queen, CAN’T WAIT for Golden Wolf next year!!
It is 11.48pm and I Just finished the Sea Queen.I have enjoyed both the Half Drowned King and The Sea Queen and look forward to the third book in the trilogy. Thank you, they are well written and I have had trouble putting them down, as evidenced by the time that I am writing. I love well written historical fiction. I am writing this from a small village outside Sydney Australia.
Thank you so much! I always appreciate hearing that. And I just sent the final draft of Book 3, The Golden Wolf to my editors–it’s off to copyediting now!
Thank you so much for writing these!
I had enjoyed reading Neil Gaimans Norse Mythologies, and it must have been my wyrd to see The Sea Queen staring at me at my local library on the way out!
Just starting on it now after finishing the marvelous HDK. Thank you again!
Thank you so much! I’m so glad you enjoyed it, and please tell your friends 🙂
Dear author,I am a Chinese postgraduate who love the story of Ragnvald. And I am very interested in translating some of it into Chinese and apply it inmy paper.I wonder if you allow me to do that.
Just finished the Golden Wolf. The entire trilogy is so good but I do think this one is the best. While none of them are just adventure stories of battles and intrigue, this one delves the most deeply into your characters and moved me the most. I’ve long loved historic fiction set in the Viking era and yours is absolutely, hands down the very best. Unforgettable. Thank you.
Just checking if you are related to my son, Garrett Hartsuyker.
Hi Linnea! Fellow NH knitter here! I wanted to tell you how much I am enjoying your work. I was knitting a pair of Nordic mittens and needed to take a break from the charts, so I grabbed my kindle and the first book on my TBR list was Half drowned King, having no idea what the premise was. Serendipity! I started it and felt myself slipping into the world you created… I paused, found some Viking ambiance visuals on YouTube, lit a few candles and queued up some gorgeous “Viking” music on Spotify. Then, I stayed up all night reading your book. Today I’m back to knitting the mittens with the Nordic music keeping me in the groove. I ordered the next books and will read the physical copies as soon as they come. It’s like I’m on an immersive vacation to the past. The book is well written, the story is everything I could hope for and the experience has been lovely. The mittens will be a fantastic reminder of your books. Looking forward to reading the rest of the trilogy!
